 SELECT COACHES SELECTION PROCESS

A.     It is strongly recommended that U14, U16 and U19 Select coaches are an AYSO certified Advanced Coach or above. It is strongly recommended that U10 and U12 Select coaches are an AYSO certified Intermediate Coach or above.

B.     Coaches shall submit their applications to the respective Division Coordinator by the (target date - fourth week of the Fall season). If there are not enough applications submitted, the Division Coordinator shall recruit over the following week. Division Coordinator shall submit copies of all applications to the Regional Commissioner. (see Division Coordinator for applications). Coaches may coach only one Select team at a time unless they have received prior approval from the Regional Commissioner.

C. The number of Select teams per division will be determined by the Regional Commissioner and Division Coordinator, depending on the number of qualified coaches and players available in that division.

D. The Selection Committee (s) will follow the Select Coaches selection guidelines as established by the Coaching Staff. Generally, it is expected that the Selection Committees would interview the individual coach candidates, observe the candidates during practices and games, interview parents on their teams, interview opposing coaches, review game cards, etc.

E. The  Selection Committee (s) shall submit their selections to the Regional Commissioner (target date - on the Monday preceding the seventh week of play). The Regional Commissioner shall review the selection and have final approval on all coaches picked by the Selection Committee (s). The Selection Committee will then notify the coaches, (target date - by the following Friday). Coaches not selected for a Select team should be provided some constructive feedback on the Selection Committee’s decision.

  SELECT PLAYER’S SELECTION PROCESS

A. Each divisional Fall coach shall submit a list of all qualified players with their ratings to be considered for Select teams. This list will be turned into the Division Coordinator by the Monday preceding the fifth week of play.  For any player the Fall coach believes is qualified enough for Select play, the player rating form, or supplemental information, should indicate:

the position(s) the player plays,

if the player plays goalkeeper,

parent involvement as a coach, assistant coach, referee or team parent, and

whether the player is willing to make a commitment to the Region 47 Select programs. (Any exception to this shall be approved by the Division Coordinator and the Regional Commissioner).

The Division Coordinator will copy and distribute the player rating forms (and any supplemental information) to each Select coach in that division.

Select coaches may scout players at any time.  The Select coach may scout and select any player, whether identified by the Fall coach as qualified or not.  If they have talked to players (or parents of players) about their commitment and/or interest in Select play, they must inform other Select coaches in that division of their interest in that player.  When speaking with parents the scouting coach must do so discretely so as not to draw too much attention from neighboring persons.

B. If there is only one team in a division, a committee will be charged with selecting the team.  The committee will select the best possible team to represent Region 47.  The committee shall carefully and strongly consider the recommendations of the team’s coach as well as other factors that it considers to be appropriate. This committee will meet the last week of the regular season to select the team. This committee will select the best possible team in that division to represent Region 47.

C. At this same meeting if there is more than one team in a division, teams shall be formed as equally balanced teams.  The Select teams will be chosen by 1) allowing each coach to have all of his/her “first pick” players that have not been picked by another coach and then 2) an alternating serpentine draft, continuing until each team’s roster is complete. The respective Division Coordinator would oversee this process to ensure that the coaches are working closely together with the goal of creating equally balanced teams and to apply Region 47 policies and practices.  The target date for the formation of Select teams shall be no later than the first Saturday in December.

D. The Select teams may not commence practice prior to the end of pool play in the Regional Tournament that concludes the Fall season.  If a Select team has players that are still participating in playoffs with their Fall team, coaches must comply with the requirements of the Regional Guidelines regarding excessive practice times.

E.  If Region 47 joins a Select league, it is mandatory for a Region 47 team to play in all scheduled Select League and playoff games unless a valid reason is submitted in advance in writing and approved in writing by the Regional Commissioner.  Attendance at an alternate tournament or event is not a valid reason not to play a scheduled game.  All Region 47 Select teams are expected play in the Locomotion Tournament and all Area or Section All-Star tournaments (if qualified).
